Zvari Home: How to decorate your home

One of the best things about getting a new house is that you’re working with a clean slate. This means that you can decorate it any way you want and show off your personality. From the colour of the walls to the type of furniture you get, it’s all about you. But since you’re decorating a new house, it’s quite easy to splurge and get everything immediately.

While there’s nothing wrong with getting everything you want to decorate your house, it could cause you to go over the budget. Without preparation, you might not be able to buy the necessary things first and decorate your house artfully. Sure, you can buy anything you want for your house but rooms should also complement each other.

That’s why Zvari Home has a few decorating tips for you. That way, you’ll only be buying the necessary items while still making your home gorgeous. These tips are also a great checklist on what you need to do to make sure that you’re able to decorate your house to its full potential. Take a look at the tips we have for you:

Measure everything

You’ve already bought that gorgeous sofa from the store and you’re excited to have it in your living room, only to find out that it’s too big for it. And while some stores offer returns for the wrong size, it’s quite a hassle to go back to the store and return that sofa. You’ll have to wait as they check if they have the right size, or longer if they don’t and the store will have to wait for the right size to be delivered.

Even if the furniture you bought fits the room, it can overwhelm it and make the room feel cramped. By measuring what size your furniture should be, from the length, width and height to how it will interact with the rest of the room, you’ll be able to avoid buying in the wrong size.

Since your room will also have windows and other pieces of furniture, it’s best to measure how much space you need for each of them so that they won’t obstruct others. Measuring your windows will also give you an idea of how wide or long your curtains should be. That way, it won’t fall short or be too long when you install them.

Have a floor plan

A floor plan with a bird’s eye view or viewed from the top will be a great help when trying to layout the rooms in your house. This gives you an idea of how much space you’re working on and how to place pieces of furniture so that they are not obstructive.

There are several ways to draw up a floor plan and one of them is by using a pencil, paper and a ruler. This is the easiest and quickest way to draw up a floor plan since you don’t have to learn and program to do so. The only drawback with this is that you can’t experiment on the position of furniture too much. Sure, you can erase pencil marks from paper but it can get your floor plan dirty and confusing.

Another option is to use programs like AutoCAD and make a floorplan on your computer. Since it’s digital, you’ll be able to move pieces of furniture in your plan to find the best positions. Aside from AutoCAD, there are a lot of floor plan programs and even apps for your smartphones and tablets.

Know how you want to use the sections of your house

One of the easiest mistakes that homeowners make when decorating is that they buy furniture that they won’t use fully or often. Like getting a long dining table for 10 when only about three to four will eat at a time and you don’t usually have visitors. Ask yourself how you will use a section of your room and how many people will live there.

If you’re not keen on inviting people over, then you won’t need an extravagant dining table, just enough for you and your family, and the occasional guest. If you plan on having family movie nights, then it’s better to have a large, comfortable sofa and a coffee table to accommodate your food and drinks. It’s all about how you want to live in your house.

Get ideas from the pros

Interior design has been around for quite a while and even if you don’t follow them, you can get ideas from numerous sources. You can get house or design magazines, people from social media, or even a quick photo search of interior design for a specific room. You can copy them directly or just take ideas you like. From the colour of the walls and its interaction to different pieces of furniture to the layout of their living room. Imagination is your only enemy.

You can see what colour would work with a specific room or with certain pieces of furniture. It can also give you ideas on what kind of furniture or style you want, and ideas on how to solve decorating issues such as curtains. If you’re looking into space-saving furniture, you can also check out the different strategies you can do the same in your home.

Develop a budget

One of the mistakes people make is that they love going on a shopping spree when decorating a home. You might want to buy that expensive sofa set because it looks good but you won’t have any budget for the rest of the house or worse, for the necessary things the house needs. You might want that sofa but your bathroom needs fixing, and you won’t have a budget for it if you bought that.

Having a budget not only limits your spending but also helps you look for only the necessary things you need in the house. It also gives you a roadmap on how you would need to divide your budget for each room to complete them. You can still splurge a bit if you want for a unique piece of furniture, but you will still need to decide where you want to cut back to stay within the budget.

Some people also tend to go around the budget, saying that the coffee table they want is only a few dollars more expensive than what they allotted for it. But if you do this for every piece of furniture, and you can’t say you won’t until you’re there, you’ll go over the budget more than you would expect.

Plan the phases

Before you even start shopping for decorations or furniture, make sure that everything in your house is already finished. If there are a few messy works that need to be done at your house like finishing the drywall or painting the walls and ceiling, it’s best to hold off getting furniture. Not only will they obstruct the space you can work on but it also makes them vulnerable to dirt and paint.

You can also plan which rooms you need to have furniture or decorations first. The most common area to start with is your bedrooms since it’s here you’ll spend most of your time. Other than that, it depends on you on how you want to start filling up your house. You can start with a specific room that you know you’ll be using often and furnish that fully, or you can furnish each room little by little but at the same time.

How this works is that you only get the essential pieces first for each room. Like a sofa and a coffee table for the living room, dining tables and chairs for the dining room and doing the same things in other rooms. From there, you can start decorating and adding furniture one section at a time. This way, you can use a section of your house and just decorate it when you have the budget.

Make use of your lights

Lights in a house do more than just provide illumination. They can also give an accent and improve how each room could look. You can use several sources of light to both illuminate and decorate your rooms. You can have a strong light in your living room but if you just want to chill and relax, a floor lamp or a table lamp can give you the light and ambience you need to relax and get comfortable.

Some interior decorators also use recessed sections of the house and add lights as accents to them. Not only can they change the mood of the room, but they also look good when used correctly. LED strip lights are your best bet for this since they are small and can be fitted easily in any nook and cranny.

You can install them behind TVs, underneath cabinets or in the recessed ceiling. Plus, some LED strips have different colours so you can change them, usually with a mobile app, to fit your needs and the look you want to have.
